Loved him and miss him.

One of the best nights I had was with walter. It was after a Catholic Council meeting a couple of months before my wedding. Walter could not make my bachelor party ( he wasn't a golfer) so instead he decided we should hang out in the city after the meeting. We tore the city up that night and I'll leave it at that. The thing I miss the most about him is incredible sense of humor and his laugh. Miss you my brother.

When I was little all though my Uncle Walter was big a tough on the outside he wasn't on the inside. When I went anywhere with him every little kid was scared of him, but not me. All the little babies he said Hi to would cry. I called him Uncle Scary. I love you Uncle Scary<3

In 1987, my friend Cathy and I went to Club Med in Martinique. While walking around the grounds of the club, I had something to mail and asked a guy in passing if he knew where a mailbox was. With his tall stature and in a black shirt with teal-colored skeletons on it, the guy pointed to the nearest mailbox with long fingers and in a deep voice said, “Ovah theah” in his Long Island accent. Being from Bayonne New Jersey, I was familiar with that accent and I asked him where he was from. Well, not only did I learn he was from Massapequa, I soon learned that he was a Local 3 electrician, he played the harmonica, he had a voice like Rodney Dangerfield and an amusing personality to match. Before we all knew it, he had the whole place in stitches making up blues songs off the cuff on his harmonica and telling entertaining tales. For the next three years I would keep in touch with him. I’d call him and say, “make me laugh”. And laugh I did…. That was 22 years ago, but Martinique in 1987 was a place and time not to be forgotten and neither was a tall guy with a harmonica in his shirt pocket from Long Island named Walter Cannon.

I was very close friends with Walter from 2nd grade until sometime in High School. Early on in our friendship, I remember his Mom, (in a Plymouth Duster), and my Mom taking turns taking us from swimming lessons at Marjorie Post. We very good friends for quite a long time. I had no prior knowledge of his accident and hadn't seen or heard anything about Walter since High School days. Early this Summer, out of nowhere I had a dream that there was an accident Walter died. The dream was really bugging me so I thought I'd look up his name on Google and see if there was any information on my old buddy. It was then that I found out he was killed in the accident about a month before. When I read about his accident, it hit me pretty hard. I had always hoped to bump into Walter again and now know this will never happen. I read about his family, and how tragic this is. As if that dream out of nowhere was not enough I read his wifes name was Jennifer and he had a boy 7 and a girl 5. His family mirrored mine. My wifes name is Jennifer and my boy is 7 and my girl is 5. It really makes you think about things. I am glad to see these postings in his memory, and I hope his family can stay strong.

I will always remember Walter telling me stories about Josie and Wyatt with a grin on his face from ear to ear. Every time we were at a function he always asked me to make sure I talked to Jen so that she wouldn't be bored. Of course we tried but with 5 kids between us it was always fly by conversations. He really loved his family. He ran the Allied fishing trip for years and always asked me to do the pool. The year my husband became President of the club I had confronted him to do the pool like I did for years, and he said no way am I going to let the first lady do it! And sure enough he made someone else do it. I really did miss him on this years fishing trip. He is certainly be missed by all who knew him.

Cousin Jen would always send cousin Walter to pick up my birthday and Christmas gifts. I would always recieve gift cards from my favorite stores. When I opened my Christmas card, there was a Lulu's gift certificate. (Lulu's only has young pretty girls working there, with their heads up high- its a high end boutique) When I ran over to thank cousin Walter, he explained to me that when he walked in the store, every girl working there stared at him and ran behind the register with the phone in their hands ready to dial 911. He put his hands up and said, "It's ok, I'm just picking up a gift for my cousin." I know for a fact that when he left that store, he had all the pretty female store employees laughing and feeling foolish for judging my "tough guy" cousin. After all, he has only touched a couple thousand lives. I miss you so much cousin Walter! Love, Cousin Shaye

He was special to me, being my first nephew born when I was only 11 years old. I felt so grown up when my sister Sue and Walter Sr. asked me to babysit for him. Sheesh, he was so frail and tiny. But I changed his skinny assed diapers and loved staying overnite in Bayside taking care of this little precious baby. Too funny right? Little, frail and skinny? How did he turn into that big man that was larger than life? Which he surely became. I'm sorry I missed so many years of it...and I'm not too exactly sure why. But...I'm glad tho, my last meeting with Walter was fun and we had quite a few laffs that night. Since his passing, I've had the pleasure of meeting people who knew him and loved him also. And they all made me feel so very proud that my nephew Walter became the big man with the big heart and had so very many friends who loved him dearly. Loved you, Walter...you'll be forever in my heart... Aunt Luanne

I have known Walter since about Kindergarten or First grade, so I guess that makes it about 39-40 years. So many great times. So many great memories. From the garage attic fort in Massapequa, to the Three Streams woods, Mary's Hole and White log. Driving around the "Broccoli Spear" listening to Walter's "Good Sh*t" mixed tapes, (always killer cruising tunes) and doing Rampies where Walter would get the "Spear" up to cruising speed and try to get it airborne off a curb, or hill or other means of ramp. One memory with Walter still makes me smile often. Now the "spear" wasn't your ordinary vehicle. It was a big old wagon missing floor boards and on many occasions seats. One day me and Walt are driving around and he says, Meat go ahead and put yer' feet down. I said Hell no i'll go thru the floor. Don't worry he said I fixed the floorboards and welded in some metal panels. Cool - So I did and we continued driving. A few minutes later I say, Walt, whats up with all the missing street signs around here lately and he simply replied by pulling up the carpet on the floor of the car {YIELD,One Way, STOP). Every time I see a missing street sign I think of Walter, smile and want to laught my ass off! Billy, Debbie, Jen, Wyatt, Josie, Mom Cannon, Mr Cannon and families. I am truly sorry for the sudden and painful loss of Walter. And while I regret that I was not in close contact with Walter the past few years I am very thankful to have known Walter for so many years of great friendship and memories. I hope all your wonderful memories will help to comfort and carry you all in the days and years to come. With Sincerest condolences and regards, John Conners (Meat) P.S. - Nice job with this tribute site "Brother Bill" That's why you got the "Last Clean Shirt"

Walter Cannon Jr. will always be present in my heart. I remember meeting Walter when I first became an apprentice in Local Union No. 3. I remember seeing Walter before apprentice school and always hearing a great story about the day he had with that contractor. All I can say is that they were great stories. I have had the priviledge to know him my entire career in Local 3 and I know that he was the first person ALOT of people went to when they needed help with anything, anywhere at any time. He was not just there for a friend, he was there for anybody who asked him for anything. I am happy to have known him and will be even happier thinking about him frequently the rest of my life. When Walter stood next to my 4'11" mother he seemed like BIg Foot engulfing an elf. She would disappear! Of course, he was a gentle bear and it didn't take long to figure that out. FOR MOM: At one time, a man that tall and big, with tatoos and a huge beard might have frightened this petite woman to cross the street rather than meet his gaze. (Small children were always shy and hid away at first.) But Angela adored Walter. It was for him that she would, after making 3 other desserts to please her own children, make that extra lemon pie "just for Walter." I am sure she greeted him with one of those pies at the Pearly Gates. FOR ME: At all our crowded family functions, Walter never failed to find me and kiss me hello. We lived in different worlds but at Debbie and Eddie's or Walter and Veronica's or in his own warm and loving home, we were on a level playing field called family. And that mattered most to him. He treated me with respect and affection. We miss him. All of us.

My daughter, Shaye, Walter's first cousin was about one year old. It was Thanksgiving Day. The whole family was seated at the dinner table. Shaye kept crying and crying. There was nothing we could do to console her. Walter could not enjoy his dinner until Shaye was happy. He stayed with her until there were no more tears. For some reason that will always leave and indelible mark in the recesses of my memory of what a caring person he was. I also remember that the last time I saw Walter, just before his death, he had a calmness surrounding him. He seemed to be at peace.

I am so proud of all Walter accomplished in his life. Life just isn't always fair and this really sucks. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about my big brother and I miss him terribly. Josie and Wyatt will learn all about their daddy from the great stories we can all share. He was a great dad and I know how his kids were his treasures. I have too many Walter stories to write here, but i will share a few. I remember how he used to sneak out of the house and climb out his window at night. He also had the cool fort in the top of the garage in massapequa where he would hang out with the boys. I rememer trips to the beach in the station wagon he nicknamed the "broccoli spear". This car had no interior seats and you could see the road through the floor. He would drive with his knee playing the harmonica while me and my friends were sliding all over the inside of the wagon. Walter had a personality and an appearance that was larger than life. In fact his belly was larger than life too. Walter used to say ,"some guys have six pack abs but I have twelve pack abs!" He was a patriotic american and a proud union man. He even had a tattoo on the bottom of his foot that read, "Made in America" If I got a tattoo mine would say, " Maid in Amercia" Walter's death has shown me how many people loved and cared for Walt. I am deeply touched by all the outpouring of love and generosity that people have shown my family. Keep posting your memories of Brother Walt to help keep his memory alive. God Bless all of you and live with no regrets!! Debbie Cirella
