I have known Jitske for almost 2yrs and worked with her for 1 of those years on the Medair Somalia programme. Initially I had replaced her so she could spend more time with family: her husband Joep, and beautiful children Noah and Marije were so important to her. Jitske had actually attempted to leave Medair a few times, and had had several different leaving parties and cakes from Java! However Jitske was not the kind of person an organisation could just let go of, she had way too much ability, experience and knowledge. She had worked with Medair on and off for the past 10yrs, working as a Nutritionist and Nurse in South Sudan, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia and Somalia in both emergency assessments and programme implementation. Jitske had the perfect balance of knowledge and practical experience, and the ability to use these skills to participate in higher level health and nutrition cluster meetings and focus groups. She always was looking for ways to improve our programmes including advocating trials and new guidelines: Jitske was certainly an initiator and forward thinker. Her organisational skills were second to none! Jitske was someone who always made a difference. I can’t remember how many times Henrieke (our Country Director) and I would find ourselves not knowing how we were going to solve a problem, complete a proposal or sort out a complicated issue with a UN agency before we would breathe a sigh of relief and say, ah it’s ok, Jitske is on the case – she’ll sort it! Underneath all of this her passion to show God’s love by practically helping marginalised people in the areas of health and nutrition was obvious to all who knew her. I join with everyone past and present in Medair who worked alongside Jitske in recognising how much she contributed to the many different programmes she has been involved with. We will definitely miss not only her many skills but her personality and passion. Jitske was not just a work colleague but a good personal friend of mine. She was such a beautiful, elegant lady with a fun sense of adventure and sense of humour and, on top of all that, she could really cook! Her strong faith in God during these past 10 months has truly been an inspiration to me and I know to many of you also. We pray to the same loving God, whom we just don’t understand, for comfort and peace for her family – particularly Joep, Noah, Marije and Jesse whom she loved so much. Jitske, I was honoured to have worked alongside you and to have called you my friend, I miss you terribly.

I cant but help write this to Jitske and family as if in the present form and say that the other day we met a little boy called Noah in our new playgroup for our son. It brought such wonderful memories from Ibadan of you, Joep and later to Nairobi just when Noah was born. I remember the swims you used to take when expecting Noah. Few days but touching ones. We grieved for your passing, complained it was too early. We didnt count the many blessing you had, that you brought to us all. It was never the length of time that mattered. We celebrate Jitske, Joep and the children in our thoughts, wishes and prayers everyday. Jitske, you are not forgotten, and for your family, we are there for them. Praying for divine providence to hold you and keep you until we meet again. Annita & family.

I first met Jitske when I joined the Riara Rd home fellowship. I remember her and Joep's hospitality as they opened their home to our group every wednesday. She loved celebrating the holy communion and always honoured the Lord by adequately preparing for holy commnunion evening with songs and scriptures. Jitske's love and tenderness towards her children was truly inspiring. She was a wonderful friend and sister in Christ and will be deeply missed.

I spent such a short time with Jitske in South Sudan but whenever I think of her I remember her stunning smile and beautiful hair. The picture I've chosen is the aeroplane because she had to go on so many trips to so many places and in some cases without any Medair folks. For that I also often thought she was very brave. She served with a big heart and although we only spent a short time together, over 8yrs ago, I still remember how very special she was.

Jitske- I was going on facebook to send you a happy birthday message and I see this.... I'm deeply saddened by the news. I read that you were surrounded by your family and loved ones. You have left a void in many lives that will never be filled. But you also leave a myriad of people that will remember you with a smile and warm heart, alive in our memory. Joep, Noah, Marije and Jesse- I had the chance to meet and work with your wife/ mother while living in Nairobi. We worked together for a few months and soon became found of each other. I liked her spirit right away: she had a big smile, and clear eyes that were sincere. It was a difficult period for me, during which she always found a moment to offer me a smile and words of courage. I never knew she was sick, she never mentionned it. She was strong, optimistic and generous, very generous. You have a wonderful mother and wife. She lives for ever in our memories. With love, Tania

I learned about this sad news while visiting my relatives in the Netherlands over the Christmas period. I was obviously shocked to hear, and still am. I used to know Jitske from our Wageningen University days, over 10 years ago, and remember her as such a positive and happy person, full of fun and energy. Unfortunately we lost contact since. Our thoughts are with her husband, children and family during this very dificult time.

Jitske, Having you and Joep as part of our first Ekklesia ar Corner was a real blessing. Our continued interaction as our children grew cemented our sense of values and friendship. You will clearly be missed by Shawana and our children. And indeed as I remember Pastor Janets valediction at Noah's dedication on the inheritance to leave for our children, its a shock that you actually hjad to do it so soon. You have fought the good fight, you have finished the race, you have kept the faith! Waswa.

I only learned of Jitske's demise today via an email from a colleague at ILRI, where Joep worked before joining World Vision. The news came as a great shock... I didn't know Jitske well, having only interacted with her on one or two occasions when she came over to ILRI for lunch. But the image of Jitske that still lingers in my mind is her full-screen picture on the desktop of Joep's computer... a truly beautiful woman with long curly hair and a cheery smile... and no doubt a source of inspiration to Joep as he struggled to beat the work deadlines! I remember the day when Joep came to the office and told us excitedly that Jitske was a few months pregnant with their first child (Noah)... we were so happy for them! From time to time during her pregnancy, he would keep us updated on how Jitske was doing... and so we rejoiced with them when we got the news of Noah's arrival (by that time Joep had left ILRI). Joep, may the Almighty God comfort you & the children.

I only interacted with Jistke on very few occasions when she visited Joep at ILRI House or came with him to some of the few social events. What I remember was a sparkling person who left a smile with everyone she met. It was easy to understand why Joep was such a jovial friend. I know the spark she left continues to shine for her family and all us who knew her.

It is so hard to take it in - thank you, Joep, for your powerful and truly honest prayer updates. They are a testimony of God's presence and love in the midst of all the loss and pain. It has been a privilege and blessing to get to know Jitske, while being together with Medair, and both of you in Nairobi; enjoying your generous hospitality and friendly home, when I was passing through from Sudan and staying in your place. A blessing seeing your kids grow , and both of you always having a helpful hand in the midst of all your work and activities and family life. You were both such good organisers, while able to live with the normal chaos in life in Africa. God's passion, joy and spirit was clearly seen in Jitske's life and it was obvious how she loved the Lord and followed in His footsteps, with all the support from you. She was the truly godly women, because of what Jesus was for her. With him she is now in heaven. I pray that our dear Lord Jesus will comfort and strengthen you day by day as you raise your children and build your life on Him, Blessings to all her family.

I would simply like to assure you of our prayers. I did not know Jitske but am looking forward to meeting her on That Day. The photomontage played at her thanksgiving service was beautiful - wow. We have known loss, (we know Kenya - recognised a shot from the Giraffe sanctuary - understand a bit of your life). Praying that He will take away the bitterness and ugliness of grief, and give you strength. God bless you and your family, Toby Hime, Emma, Matthias and Danielle's principal.

In N. Kenya, where I worked with Jitske (2000/2001), I remember her being full of fun (as well as her astonishing comittment and energy). Our teamhouse was about to flood in the desertrains. We were all out in the compound (in pouring rain) diking and playing with the wet sand. Combining fun and the necessary (getting the water out of the house). That's just one of the glimpses I've got of Jitske. She will not be forgotten.

i met jitske when i used to give her massage she was a kind and very cheerfuller lady and always had a smile for everyone.I got to know about how she helped needy children. i can remember once she helped one parking boy to find his parents and this contributed to a lot more in the boys life. Jitske was such a blessing to many people she would do anything to help a needy person.she was an amazing person. She was always so kind and considerate to me that i always welcomed seeing her at every opportunity. Her passing will not only leave a void in our lives, but in the hearts of everyone who knew her. Jitske's memory will always remain deep within my heart.I remember how much noah loved his mother he always sat aside as i gave his mother massage so Noah take heart, for I like to believe that when we lose someone close to us they still live through us and give us strength. The time we have spent with those we've lost makes them part of us. ``the race is fought way too long but now you are gone away from us farewell"

I will remember Jistke for how committed she was in what she applied herself to. Her family was very obviously her priority. I had the privalage of knowing her for a short while but I was struck with her calm strenght and loving nature. May God grant peace and comfort to all her family at this time. I am praying for you. I first met Jitske when we both attended the Medair ROC (before it was called the ROC!). Our paths crossed many times over the next few years in Nairobi, Loki, Marsabit and Padak as we both worked on the South Sudan and North Kenya programmes. Jitske was always so dedicated to her work and to the people we were serving. I remember the time in 2001 when we were visiting one of the feeding centres we were running in Northern Kenya. It was time to leave and Jitske was nowwhere to be seen. When we found her she was talking to one of the mothers and spending time with the children. The people were her priority and I know that meant a lot to them. Her legacy will live on in all the lives she touched as she lived her life to the full. She will not be forgotten

Jitske - you showed such humility and commitment to work out your walk with God. What a wonderful example your legacy is for your family - their mom loved and served those who had less! Standing with your family and friends as we remember you and as they live through the loss of your life here with them. Till we meet again. Sheryl

I will remember Jitske most of all because her love for her family came first. There was no doubt about this as far as her priorities were concerned. You guys were loved. I hope you will feel the love in the years to come. I choose to trust God's widsom and goodness especially to her young family.

I worked with Jitske when I first arrived on the Medair team for South Sudan in November 2005. I clearly remember one of our Kenyan colleagues referring to her as 'Jet-ski' which made me laugh. And it made Jitske laugh too - I remember her as being someone who always had a smile on her face. A cheerful, considerate, humble, and funny person, who made me feel very welcome in a new team. And she was clearly well respected in the team for her work on nutrition. Through Jitske I met Joep a few times in Nairobi - it was always good to have you around to the Medair team house Joep. I remember you once telling me that there are 1.6 million goats in Turkana District... an amazingly memorable statistic! You were a great inspiration as a couple living out your faith in work and life, and the strength of your faith has been shown throughout this terrible ordeal. Joep - I forwarded your email updates to some friends of mine so that they can pray for you, and they have all been deeply touched by your honesty and integrity. You have shown extraordinary dedication to your family and your Lord in these dark times, and I know you will continue to be a rock for your children in the years to come. You have a huge number of people supporting you across the world in prayer. I am sure your children will grow up inspired not just by their mother, but by their father too. God Bless, Francis

To a departed friend, sister and a co-worker. I have no much to say now but the vacuum you have left is too huge. For the many years I have known you and Joup and family extended you were a reachable help, a shoulder to lean on and a real mirror of Christianity. I cant write much now but I will miss you a lot. Thank you for everything. We appreciate GOD for you. Great is Jehovah who made you fearfully and wonderfully. R.I.P in Christ Jesus.
