I recently heard about the sad passing of Jill. I first met her 27 years ago, when I was just 16. I was very good friends with her son Adam, and Jill and Alan were very kind and supportive in letting me stay in their home when I needed to. I continued to be friends with the family for a further few years, especially as I lived in Abbots Langley until 2000, and would see Jill and Alan around in the village. Jill was a lovely, kind lady, and even though it was so long ago, I remember her always laughing (and often shouting at Adam)!! It came as a complete shock to hear such terrible news. My thoughts are with Alan, and of course to Adam. With love to you all x

I met Jill four years ago when I started to run the All Saints Mother and Toddler Group with several other mothers and Jill had volunteered to help us by coming in on a Wednesday morning and making the tea and washing up afterwards (I really don't know how she found the time when I learned the amount of other things she was involved with) She was always happy and smiling - she had time to listen and chat and tell me all about her lovely family and what they were all getting up to. She adored seeing all the children at toddlers and watching them grow. We all miss her so much. A beautiful service today.

Steve & I first met Jill 5 years ago when we were invited to the KLP summer garden party, held in Jill and Alan's delightful garden. Jill talked both of us into joing the Players and who could say 'no' to Jill? Jill encouraged me to join the wardrobe team and taught me all I know about costumes, as I certainly was a pure novice. I am so grateful to her and we will, between us all, keep the KLP wardrobe up and running, just as Jill would have wanted.

I was totally shocked to read of Jill's passing in my Watford Observer today. Very sad to hear the news and I send my condolences to all the family. Like Mike Stanyon, I met Jill when I worked at the Apsley Paper Trail between 2002 and 2006. I have fond memories of her and all the volunteers. We used to have a party in the Tudor Room at Christmas time, Jill always attended. She will be sorely missed by many.

We remember Jill from many years friendship - not just through the Players but also from sharing many New Years' Eves together. She was always so lively, so friendly, and such a delight to be with. She made all of us feel better and never had a bad word to say about anyone/thing. We shall miss her of course, but I know that others will miss her much more. We are thinking of Alan and the whole lovely Penwarden family. Sue and John

Jill was a great person, we knew her sporadically over the course of many years, and I find it hard to imagine her gone. My thoughts are with Alan, Mary, and the whole family. Dave and Anne

I knew Jill best as a local historian. we worked one morning each week in the Apsley Paper Trail Archive - she was their first volunteer 10 years ago - when I joined she was struggling with boxes ans boxes of material and desperately neeed more help. Once the wood could be seen from the trees she began to take the stories out to the community in her talks and slide shows and as a Paper Trail Guide. Jill's infectious enthusiasm communicated itself to everyone and her cautious attention to detail can be seen in the several publications which she has completed. There were many sides to Jill but the most memorable will be the friendship she freely gave.

I remember Jill as being a positive, enthusiastic and energetic person who was genuinely interested in others, and supportive particularly of local theatre. I send all my love to her family, and hope they will draw strength from Jill's many friends. Lucie xx

We have known Jill for quite some years, and when we moved into Kings Langley, she was the first visitor to our cottage. She brought us a lovely plant and some fantastic green beans from her garden. We will miss her so much, she was the most amazing and kind person. Liz & Guy

Jill's favourite playwrite, after Shakespeare, was Tom Stoppard. I was privileged to be directed by her in plays by both. In many ways, it is easy to understand why she loved the work of Tom Stoppard. Like him, she was proudly intellectual, proudly liberal; and she always managed to make people around her laugh.
