This is extremely late, see I didn't know Jasper save for a few months in 2007. I was a university art student from the U.S. and he allowed me to intern at his gallery for a few months, learn the tricks of the trade if you will. It was truly a remarkable experience and I am forever grateful to him for allowing me to have it. My experience working with Jasper and Sonia impacted my life immensely, and for that I say "thank you" I offer my condolences to you, Sonia, and family.

I first met Jasper in 1974 at the Legge's house in Glenmore rd. I was seven, Jasper was five, and the occasion was Zoe's eighth birthday party. Sometime after pass the parcel things started seriously unravelling for the few boys in attendance - the girls started hooting and picking on us, and we slunk away from the action. I clearly remember wandering into a room seeking refuge and being met by a little brown-haired boy in shorts - there was a brief pause while he checked me out; then said in a gentle voice: "You can stay in here if you like, or those girls will boss you around. They're crazy!". He welcomed me into his safe-house, offered me leggo to play with, and then I noticed Ben Cottier was already hiding behind the door. I was struck by the generosity and fine judgement of this little fellow. For the next twelve years I'd simply see Jasper around - two years below me at Glenmore rd primary school and then right through Sydney High - watched the gentle boy grow into a very composed and handsome young man. It wasn't until our late teens that I had a chance to get to know Jasper properly - post Sydney High, over the pool tables of various rather seedy Adelaide taverns, I finally got a good dose of Jaspers wonderful wit and charm, his fondness for the ridiculous, and fell in love with his unmistakeable staccato laugh. And it's that laugh that I've been addicted to ever since - the laugh that accompanied his excellent stories and wry observations, his affectionate goadings, poker-faced characatures, and absurd impersonations. That laugh turned me into a shameless clown overnight and forever. I'd do just about anything to try and coax a giggle out of that man, and have worked on that premise for the past 23 years straight, enjoying a laugh conversion rate somewhere in the mid-to-high eighties. He was very forgiving of my failures. Because to be included in the glow of Jaspers warmth and humour, his special take on people and affection for their weaknesses - and a particular, irresistible self-deprecating charm - was to share an insight into humanity and an affirmation of life itself. He had the gift of being able to loosen the mortar around the bricks of ambition and conceit, and expose bad workmanship without serious damage to a persons foundation. Excuse the labored metaphor, but all of you who knew Jasper will know the rare and gentle satire I'm talking about, again, accompanied by his disarming laugh and wide, crinkly smile. It was with this same sensitive instrument and discerning intuition that he ran Legge Gallery in Redfern. For twenty years he carefully curated and exhibited shows, giving hundreds of young painters, sculptors and ceramicists a chance, encouraging and nurturing dozens of new and talented artists, while treating anyone who came through the doors clutching a folio with the same decency and honesty he'd learnt from Alex, Geoffrey and Frank while growing up - qualities rare in any business arena, and even rarer today. In the early years at Legge Jasper worked alongside Zoe, the big sister that Jasper quietly adored. I was always moved by the love and fondness Jasper and Zoe had for one another, bound by affectionate teasing and a real enjoyment of one another's company - it was always a kind of treat to be around these two terrific people when they were in the one place. In the late nineties Jasper Legge and Sonia Ryan fell in love. I remember the day he introduced me to her - a beautiful, dark-haired woman in a striking red cape - he was as proud and excited as anyone could ever be, and she was as besotted with him as he with her. They married and before too long produced two most excellent and unique kids - Enzo, and then Hesta! Jasper was an absolutely top-shelf father! Did you know that? He really was: To see Jasper with his children was to see a special thing: basically, they constantly amazed him - he found them so funny - he truly delighted in them, and they in him with his affectionate jokes and readiness to celebrate the ridiculous. And he treated them with a patience and evenness and intelligence that allowed them to just be themselves. But he often thought they were completely crazy, and told them so. And they said he was crazy. And there were shrieks of laughter and glorious moments of chaos and madness and sheer joy! I think he was continually astonished to not only watch bits of himself and sonia emerge as they grew, but to see those bits become just part of two very individual, smart and expressive little humans. He was incredibly proud of them in his own quiet way, and just loved them so very very much. Jasper was an enthusiast, in the romantic sense. Some of the things he loved were: good science fiction movies, bad Jim Carey movies - (Ace Ventura comes to mind) The many wonderful weekends and cook-off's at Goat Island with Ben & Sophie and their kids. He was a sucker for a cracking old vine Shiraz, and a late bloomer for stilton cheese. He had a wide-ranging love of music, and aquiring amazing amps and speakers to play it through. In amongst the esoteric, such as the Handsome Family and Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, he loved good blues, and a live Dave Brewer guitar solo would send him into raptures. He loved working with wood, and created exquisite sculptural jarah shelves and benches for the family home in Dulwich Hill - really quite superb. He was a self-confessed pyromaniac and BBQ lunatic, sometime Swans barracker, and perennial Federer supporter - he loved his tennis matches with his old friend Josh. He was a reader of Proust, Dickens and the sea-going romance of Patrick O'Brien. He was an artist, a humanist, and underlying everything, he was a great believer in the great strength and importance of family and friends. For myself, Jasper and his intuition was an integral and automatic measure of what was good and fair and right in the world - I've become almost hard-wired to ask myself, and when possible Jasper directly, what he would think of any unusual situation or intrigue, person, film, book, or circumstance: whether it was good, or funny, or could be altered to be good or funny, or both, or whether just to leave it alone and move on. Just like you might turn to Bob Brown for a take on politics, or even David Attenborough for a view on the natural world. Jasper was, and always will be, an integral part of who I am, and the way I make decisions. Of course we all have to work out our own way to say Goodbye to Jasper - and this will be a work in progress always, for many of us. But I think one thing we can all do is to try and carry with us just a little bit of the gentleness, care and honesty that Jasper embodied. He was a wonderful, wonderful man - we're going to miss him like all get-out - and it's so great that you're all here today for him, and for one another.

We will miss his profound influence on us through the art that surrounds us every day including from the artists who have been influenced and supported by Jasper over the years. Jasper, was a beautiful person who loved to laugh. Cracking jokes and listening to music and talking about art are great times I remember with him. We had nicknames for each other. He was Leggo and I was Brodes. I will deeply miss that. He lives on in his beautiful children Enzo and Hester. The loss to Sonia, Alexandra, Geoffrey and Zoe is immeasurable. I will miss you Leggo. I met Jasper Legge when I was at National Art School at Legge Gallery in 1995. To see him blossom into a young father with Sonia and his two children , Enzo and Hester was an absolute pleasure to experience. He was always polite, friendly and humourous. Above this he was a fabulous role model for other aritsts who could balance a creative life with the responsibility of gallery committments and family. What a big loss. Jasper was such a kind man. Our sincere condolences to Sonia, Enzo and Hester and Jasper's family. I hope to see you soon also Sonia, love Lorna Grear and family.

Jasper Legge was an honest and perceptive art dealer, a very good painter and a decent and charming man , completely lacking in pretension.
