Now this has come as a shock. I was doing a 'Where are they now?" search and discovered that the menace has passed on. Where I lived had the disadvantage that it wasn't very close to the 60's offshore stations, but it had the advantage that I could listen to all of them. I'm not quite sure if he was playing them off against each other, but Dennis used to alternate between between Radio City and Radio 270. I never understood why he was never on one of the bigger stations, he'd have been a smash on Radio England. Unfortunately during my 5 short days on City he was elsewhere, but I wish I could have watched him in action, in addition to his off-the-wall humour he was one of the few DJs who could work the board and still think at full speed! RIP Dennis.

I worked with Dennis on the pirate radio station Radio City in the UK, during the mid sixties. He was a great character and quite unforgetable. An excellent DJ. Paul Elvey Ex engineer and part time DJ on Radio City.

I can still hear Dennis, in my head, bringing his brand of fun to the listeners of Radio City. Even his taped ad for Carmen Heat Retaining Hair Rollers! How many years later? Who says radio advertising doesn't work? I even got him to play a Motown record (Road Runner) on a City show, The 5 by 4 Show, which was supposed to be just Beatles and Stones requests. My listeners letter must have been very persuasive. I hope it wasn't that which got him the sack...

So sorry to hear of his passing. In Autumn 1966 I really wanted to hear pop music all day and tuned to the 'pirate' ship Radio 270. That gave some of the best radio listening to a 14 year old. Out of 9 djs three stood out above all the others. One of these was Dennis the Menace who had a great voice and personality. I was disappointed when he left. Even today i cann still hear his voice in my head -nearly 44 years on R.I.P.

I am the youngest son of Dennis. After my parents returned to Australia in late1968 my father wasoffered a job in radio in Wollongong, a station some 110 kilometres south of Sydney. The money on offer was not too good and accommodation expensive. It would have meant that he would have had to live and work in Wollongong during the week and return to Sydney on the weekends. Dennis was not happy with the idea of leaving his wife and young sons of whom he was very attached behind and so rejected the offer of radio in Wollongong. As Ian MacRae mentioned, my dad did in-store demonstrating (spruiking) and then moved into insurance, where he worked for several years. What you may not know about my father, is that in his early forties he attended university for the first time and obtained a degree - BA (Hons.), and a Diploma of Education from The University of Sydney. He also completed, at the Catholic University, Sydney a TEASOL course (teach English as a second language) and tutored foreign students, mainly Korean, from our home. He was three-quarters of the way through a law degree when my mother. Gail, had a work-related crises. Unfortunately, he never returned to the law. He had been studying solidly for some 10 years and it was taking its toll. I believe he was happy not to return to study and the pressures of assignments and exams.... He loved tennis and played as often as he could at a very high standard. He was playing well into his sixties. He was president of The Sydney University Lawn Tennis Club and also catered the afternoon teas for the BADGE competition for the uni club. I reminisce about the times he would take me to White City Tennis Club to watch the NSW Open and the Davis Cup. I had a great time. I remember my dad with affection - his great sense of humour and love of animals especially cats. My brother, Sean. had 2 cats, Moet and Vegas of which he was particularly fond. Memories..... Sorry to hear the sad news. Dennis was my introduction to off-shore radio. I had just arrived in London from Australia with the idea of looking for work on one of the pirate stations. I was staying in a house already rented by some Aussie girls until I could find somewhere of my own. I’d bought a transistor radio in Aden on the trip and that now hung on a door hook in the bathroom. On my third day in the house I turned it on and someone had left it on a station which identified itself as Radio City. At first I couldn’t believe the signal was coming from a pirate. It sounded far more professional than I expected. Probably because the DJ I was listening to was...you guessed it...Dennis Straney. Dennis did a spot for a competition the station was running and gave the address for listeners to post entries to. I quickly scribbled it down on a piece of toilet paper and just turned up at the office next day. Finished up meeting with station owner Reg Calvert and within three days I was working on the Radio City towers with Dennis. We became great mates and I always admired his professionalism. Some years later back in Sydney I was walking through a department store and heard a familiar voice on the PA. It was Dennis working as a spruiker. We briefly exchanged hellos but he was busy and couldn’t engage in a personal conversation and sadly lost touch and never saw him again. Dennis was one of the few people I call a Radio hero,he was many years ago my first Radio Superstar,on radio 270 his wit and superb Radio proffesionalism was second to none. Ok he was in Gods country Yorkshire,He was the first broadcaster to be if i dare say it differant. It was an unbelievable change from the fuddy duddy BBC. He made me and thousands of others laugh. In 1966 I was a mere 14 years old and was really into the 60's music scene and in those days in the UK the only place to hear the music was on BBC radio or nightime Radio Luxembourg,(Radio caroline was an option if you lived in range of their transmissions) I will always remember one Sunday morning dialing through the medium wave band on my small Benkson transistor radio discovering a radio station playing continuous pop music from a ship anchored off the Scarborough yorkshire coast called Radio 270,and it was a day that changed my life. I have since been a Radio fanatic,forget TV,radio has a way of stirring the mind,and in those days the DJ was king,and looking back,and i have thousands of hours of recording from offshore stations,radio 270 was an individual station with special presenter like Dennis "The Menace" Straney,he was so proffesional and like somthing we had never heard in the UK before. I have a rare recording of Dennis along with his 270 broadcasting crew,Peter"Boots"Bowman,Andy Kirk,his fellow Australian Neddy Noel Miller,and Hal Yorke. Dennis,YOU CHANGED MY LIFE, and you were part of the history in UK radio.My all time favourite jingle was heard on your show (It was "Who listens to radio" by Sarah Vaughn) and that tune is Dennis "The Menace"Straney. I was so sorry to hear of Dennis' passing. I worked with him on pirate Radio 270 back in '66/'67. We were all somewhat in awe of him as we were relatively inexperienced broadcasters and would marvel at his relaxed and confident style...his wicked sense of humour and use of the english language certainly set him apart.Once, when the ship put into Bridlington harbour for repairs, he and I 'jumped ship' and ended up at some birthday party, enjoyed the vino a little too much and got back just in time to see the ship sailing away! We were informed that we had both been fired as we obviously were not going to be on air for our shows next morning. I was mortified but Dennis didn't panic.......we slept in a bus shelter on the sea front and at 5 the next morning Dennis managed to talk the skipper of one of the fishing boats to 'drop us off' at our ship, mored three miles out!. .......... I'd have loved to see our boss's face when he heard us on air as if nothing had happened! Needless to say, nothing more was said about the matter. I have so many memories of Dennis, all of them good and though I haven't seen him since that summer of '67 I hope he had a great life and that he never lost that mischievous grin....what a guy! Dennis was one of the key DJs on Yorkshire's first radio station, Radio 270, when it launched in June 1966. He quickly became one the area's best known figures with his alter-ego Dennis The Menace, with a strange cast of funny voices augmenting his daily programme. Voices that my schoolfriends and I quickly emulated - he really was a cult hero. His commercial production work was legendary - I can STILL remember some of his most memorable work 44 years later! Dennis was part of our lives for far too short a period, if he had remained in the UK radio business he would have been one of the biggest stars. I heard the sad news today. I worked with Dennis in 1967 on 270 and we had great times together.
