Joe Schildmeyer is a brother to Bruno. Bruno usually called every Sunday night to find out the latest news that was happening in Ossian, IA. When Bruno visited Iowa he liked to stay at Joe’s farm. This farm was located just two-miles northeast from the home place where Bruno grew up. He would sit for hours in a lawn chair placed in the yard and reminisce the years gone by. He would comment to how peaceful it was on cool summer nights. He loved to drive around Winneshiek county and look where he played at as boy. Remembering friends the he made and examining a life that seemed to move to quick. Then it was back to California, knowing he would back to examine it all again in two years. Bruno's last visit to the farm was in 2007 and he will be missed.

The railroad help Ossian grow from 1860 until this picture was taken in 1956. Passenger service was available then, which is now only used for cargo trains. The train station in this picture is long gone, but I bet you Bruno and Joe still remembered it. I can only imagine what Ossian and the main station in Calmar Ia. looked and sounded like after the soldiers came back from WWII. Bruno was a teenager then. Time changes and waits for no one. I’m 54-years old and have no recollection of this building. I was born in 1953.

Henry and Elizabeth Schildmeyer reared 9-children. One sibling of Bruno’s, Rosemary was hurt in a car accident in mid-1950s near Council Bluffs, IA and died a month later in Rochester Minnesota. Bruno’s brother William (Billy) Schildmeyer was killed in Los Angeles, CA. in 1967 who was then working on an electric pole that collapsed. Bruno’s sister Agnes passed away in January 2008 from cancer too. Bruno’s parents Henry and Elizabeth passed in the late 1980’s. Survivors include Sister Margret who lives in Indiana, Francis who lives in Orange, CA and Mary who now lives in Lacrosse, WI and has suffered a stroke several years ago.

I knew Bruno from his days in Ossian, Iowa. Lived on a nearby farm. He was a pleasure to be with. God bless him

I was privileged to have know Bruno through the United Singles for the last 3 years. I often shared a table with him and Helen. When he found out that we both spoke German, he tried and recollected much of our mother-tongue. Unfortunately, he spoke very low and partially because of his missing teeth and my old ears, it was hard to understand him. I often guessed at what language he was using and there was a lot of "ja, ja" on my part. One day, he looked at me and said: "You have no idea what I just said", and I replied "You are absolutely right".
I appreciated his kind and gentle spirit, and his unwavering strength to make light of his suffering. I saw him in the hospital, where I volunteer, while he was going through Chemo, but he never once complained. It must be a German thing. My German mother called it "the inner corset".
In any case, I felt privileged to have known him, and I am sure, he looked down on us all today and smiled.

God saw you getting tired, and a cure was not to be,
So He put His arms around you and whispered, “Come with me.”
With tearful eyes we watched you suffer, and saw you fading away,
Although we loved you dearly we could not make you stay.
A golden heart stopped beating, working hands were put to rest,
God broke our heats to prove to us He only takes the best-
Thanks Aggie

"To laugh often and love much; to win the respect of intellingent persons and the affection of children; to earn the approbation of honest citizens and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to give of one's self; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exultation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived - this is to have succeeded." - Copy to Clipboard
