THE ULTIMATE MEASURE OF A MAN IS NOT WHERE HE STANDS IN MOMENTS OF COMFORT AND CONVENIENCE, BUT WHERE HE STANDS AT TIMES OF CHALLENGE AND CONTROVERSY. Fr.Alex, we love you so much. God will take care of you

HENRICIANS COLOMBO OBA OF ST.HENRY’S COLLEGE, ILAVALAI FR. ALFRED ALEXANDER SSS CRUSADER OF PEACE AND RECONCILIATION The untimely passing away of Fr. Alexander in Melbourne on 20th June 2011, following a major heart attack had shocked and engulfed the Catholics in Colombo and Blessed Sacrament Community in particular into untold sadness. He was 72, of which; 50 years into religious profession and in his 44th year of priesthood. Born to a devout catholic family at Allaipiddy near Jaffna on 12 September 1938, his other siblings are George, Christina and late Mariathas. He was put in the Hostel of St. Henry’s College, Ilavalai for secondary education during rector-ship Fr. B. Deogupillai 1953 – 1956 (later Bishop of Jaffna). A Fr. Henry Polini was sent to Jaffna by the Blessed Sacrament Community to learn Tamil Language and Fr. Deogupillai assigned the young man Alfred Alexander with the task in 1955; the association thus paved way for him to choose the vocation in the Blessed Sacrament Congregation. Since early 1960s he was in Australia for his religious formation, duly professed he returned to Colombo to be ordained none other than by his former mentor now Bishop: Rev. Dr. B. Deogupillai on 18th April 1968 at St. Philip Neri’s Church, Colombo 11. Fr. Alexander had a sense of civilisation about him, that he was a tormented persona witnessing the tragedy and trauma of the unending war with its rising intensity during 1990 to 2009. He set out getting to the brass tracks, once took to the streets leading a peace march in Colombo and in these noble efforts he was in grand company with hierarchy Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Apostolic Nuncio Most Revd. Mario Zenario and then Anglican Bishop of Colombo De Chikera as a peace fighter he always sought reconciliation that all communities to live in harmony and inspired members of his Province. His affinity with the OBA of St. Henry’s has had been a lasting one. Willing to go with us to any length, one such instance was that we were in throes of hectic preparation for the grandeur centenary celebration of founding of our Alma Mater: St. Henry’s College, Ilavalai and we were very keen to have then Apostolic Nuncio Most Revd. Mario Zenario as our Chief Guest and had made our wish known to Fr. Alexander, within a couple of days he buttoned up matters and took us for a formal audience with the Papal Nuncio and in numerous ways Fr. Alex was an unsung organizer working closely with us epitomising the age old dictum: “Cometh the hour; cometh the man” thus Centenary became spectacular event on 18th November 2007. The OBA had honoured Fr. Alexander as their Chief Guest for their 1999 AGM & Annual Events. Those of us of the Henrician Community based in Colombo, who knew Fr. Alex too well no doubt will miss him, a few of his Hostel mates like Anton Jeyanathan, K. Kanagasabai who are inseparable companions to him in life will dearly miss him, by the same token we the younger Henricians surely be devoid of his valued guidance in the affairs of the Henrician OBA, a pillar of strength all along, that he indeed was. Fr. Alexander: the towering and familiar figure in the precincts of St. Philip Neri’s Church, Pettah - who steered the destinies of the Blessed Sacrament Community as its Regional Director from 1987 to 1995 to grow from strength to strength, for the most part after the Australian Fathers left the shores – is no more, but his total commitment to the Blessed Sacrament Congregation way of life, his liberality of grace, compassion and humanism towards the common man that he served, are all his legacy, that he left behind for us from his memorable life. May he rest in peace. Meno Thiruchelvam President – Henricians Colombo (OBA) Meno.henrician@gmail.com

Dear Fr.Alex, You may not have saved a lot of money in your life, but if you have saved a lot of heartaches for other folks, you are a pretty rich man. While earning your daily bread, be sure you share a slice with those less fotunate. WE MISS YOU

Fr. Alfred Alexader, was my mentor and first contact with religious life. He inspired me to join the Blessed Sacrament Congregation in 1977, as I had just completed by Secondary Education. He encouraged me all the way as I made my long journey to the altar. He was the most inspiring religious priest I had ever met and I owe my religious life and vocation to him. I was his vocation. He saw me through thick and thin and shared my joys and sorrows like my own father. Yes, He was a father to me. He enabled me to find myself and to realize my potential but he also understood me and accepted me and supported me even when I failed and could not continue any longer on this long journey. He helped me to seek God's will and I know he shed tears for me when I left the religious life. I now shed tears for him for he never said good bye to me. Father Alex, wherever you are, I know you are in heaven, please pray for me and I shall pray for you. May you now enjoy the heavenly banquet of the Master who will say to you "Well done Good and Faithful Servant, welcome into my Father's House". Good bye till we meet on that beautiful shore- Trevor Ludowyke, Sri Lanka
